What it costs a small business to ignore AI assistants
After a hailstorm, a homeowner asks an AI assistant for a roofer who can inspect damage this week and help with an insurance claim. It names three companies. A roofer ten minutes away, with great reviews, isn’t one of them, and will never know the job existed. Here is how to work out what that silence costs, and what it costs to fix.

The cost of ignoring AI is hard to see, and that is exactly what makes it expensive. When a customer asks an AI assistant, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Claude, to recommend a business and you are not in the answer, nothing happens on your end. No missed call, no lost quote, no complaint. The customer simply books someone else. This guide helps you put a rough number on that, and weigh it against what it actually costs a small business to get ready.
Take a family-run roofing company with two crews and strong reviews. After a spring hailstorm, a homeowner nearby asks an assistant: “Find a roofer who can inspect hail damage this week, works with insurance claims and serves my area.” The roofer’s website says “Call for a free estimate” and nothing about storm inspections, insurance or which towns it covers. The assistant can’t tell whether it fits, so it recommends three competitors whose pages answer the question. The roofer’s phone stays quiet, and the owner assumes it was a slow week.
That is the pattern. Ignoring AI assistants rarely costs you customers you already have. It costs you the new ones you never get the chance to meet.
What is the real cost of ignoring AI for a small business?#
The cost is not a fee or a penalty. It is missed first conversations. More customers now start their search by asking an assistant to compare businesses for them, and assistants can only recommend businesses whose details they can read and check. When your prices, services, area and booking path are missing or unclear, an assistant is more likely to pick a business that answers the question plainly.
Many small businesses have this gap. In our review of 10,777 business websites, only about one in five of the pages we examined showed a visible price. That is a gap your competitors probably have too, which also means closing it can set you apart.
Where do small businesses lose customers to AI search?#
Customers do not lose interest at random. They drop off at specific moments, and each one is a question your business could have answered:
| Moment | What the customer asks | What happens if your details are missing |
|---|---|---|
| Search | “Roofer near me who handles insurance claims” | You are not mentioned, because nothing says you do insurance work |
| Compare | “Which beginner yoga studio has a Saturday class and a drop-in price?” | A studio with a clear schedule and price is shown first |
| Check fit | “Web designer for a small bakery, under $3,000, live within a month” | An assistant cannot tell if you take projects that size, so it skips you |
| Book | “Book a pet sitter for three nights starting Friday” | Without a booking path, the assistant moves on to one that has it |
Each row is a customer who was ready to spend money. Our guide to AI for small business: what AI assistants mean for you explains the five questions an assistant needs answered before it suggests anyone.
How do you estimate what ignoring AI costs your business?#
You cannot see the customers you missed, but you can make an honest estimate. Use four numbers you already know:
- How many new customers you get in a typical month.
- What a new customer is usually worth to you in their first year.
- What share of those customers you think started by asking an AI assistant. If you don’t know, ask your next ten new customers how they found you. Our guide to how to tell if AI assistants are sending you customers shows where else to look.
- How many of those AI searches you might be missing. Ask an assistant the questions your customers ask and see whether you appear.
Then multiply. Here is how the math might look for three businesses. These are example numbers, not averages, so swap in your own:
| Business | Missed customers a month (example) | Value of each (example) | Possible cost a year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roofing company | 2 repair jobs | $1,200 a job | $28,800 |
| Yoga studio | 4 new students | $600 in first-year classes | $28,800 |
| Web designer (remote) | 1 small project | $2,500 a project | $30,000 |
| Pet sitter | 3 new clients | $400 a year in bookings | $14,400 |
This is an estimate, not a forecast
Nobody can tell you exactly how many customers you are missing, and no tool can guarantee an AI will recommend you. The point of the math is to decide whether an afternoon of work is worth it. For most service businesses, even one extra customer a month covers it many times over.

For most small businesses, getting ready for AI assistants costs time more than money. You don’t need a new website, a developer or an AI tool of your own. You need your existing information to be clear, current and in one place. Here is what acting costs compared with waiting:
| Cost | If you act now | If you wait |
|---|---|---|
| Time | An afternoon to fix your main service page, listings and booking path | The same work later, while competitors already show up |
| Money | Often nothing. The Nexez scan and Free plan cost nothing up front | Customers you never hear from |
| Control | You decide what assistants can book and what waits for you | Assistants guess from whatever they can find |
| What you learn | What customers ask for and which offers get attention | Nothing, because missed customers leave no trace |
The web designer in the table is a good example. Working remotely, she competes with designers everywhere. A page that says “Small business websites from $2,400, live in four weeks, for clients anywhere in the US and Canada” lets an assistant match her to the bakery owner. A portfolio with no prices and a contact form does not.
What doesn’t ignoring AI cost you?#
It is worth being honest about this too. Your regulars will keep coming back. Word of mouth still works, and people who already know your name will still find you. Reviews still matter, and so does doing good work. AI assistants do not replace any of that. What they change is how strangers find and compare businesses, and that is where new customers come from.
So if your business is full and you are turning work away, the cost of waiting is low. If you want more new customers, or a steadier flow of the right kind of work, the cost of waiting is probably higher than it looks.
How Nexez lowers the cost of getting started#
Nexez is built so a small business can get ready without a big project. You start from what you already have, such as your website, a spreadsheet or tools like Square, Stripe, Calendly or Google Calendar, and Nexez turns it into clear offers with your real prices, choices and booking questions. Nothing goes live until you approve it.
- Sale rules decide what happens to each request: it can go ahead, wait for your review or stop. The roofer can let inspections go ahead and have every repair wait for a look first.
- The Agent Simulator lets you try a request like “hail damage inspection this week, insurance claim” and see what Nexez understood and what is missing.
- Sales insights show which assistants and offers bring buyers, so you stop guessing whether AI matters for your business.
- The Free plan includes five published listings, the Agent Simulator and checkout, with no time limit and no card required. Nexez earns a 5% commission only when a sale is completed through Nexez, and card-processing fees are separate.
The current plan details are on the pricing page. For an honest view of where Nexez fits and where it doesn’t, read what Nexez is and what it does and doesn’t do. If you are unsure about letting assistants book for you, read can you trust an AI assistant to book appointments for you?

Is AI worth it for a small business?
For most small businesses, yes, because getting ready costs mostly time. Clear prices, services, service area and a booking path help AI assistants recommend you. The Nexez scan and Free plan let you start without paying anything up front.
Should my small business use AI?
You don’t need to use AI tools yourself to benefit. Your customers already use AI assistants to find and compare businesses. What matters most is that your information is clear enough for those assistants to understand and recommend you.
What happens if my business is not on ChatGPT?
Customers who ask ChatGPT for a business like yours will be pointed to competitors whose details it can read. You won’t see those lost customers, which is why the cost is easy to miss. Clear pages and accurate listings are the place to start.
How much does it cost to get my business ready for AI?
Often nothing but time. Fixing your service pages and listings is free, and the Nexez scan needs no signup. The Nexez Free plan has no monthly fee, and Nexez earns a 5% commission only when a sale is completed through Nexez.
Is it too late to get my business found by AI assistants?
No. Many small business websites still leave out prices, service areas and booking details, so clear information can still set you apart. AI assistants check current information, so improvements you make now can help.
Will AI assistants replace word of mouth?
No. Regulars and referrals keep coming. AI assistants change how strangers find and compare businesses, which is where most new customers come from, so they add to word of mouth rather than replace it.
